A spoiler is the fastest way to change a car's profile from the rear, and the range runs from a subtle lip on the trunk lid to a full three-piece roof wing. A 2015-2022 Mustang spoiler, for example, is not compatible with convertible models, and the 2019-2024 RAM 1500 roof wing fits only trucks with the panoramic roof. Matching the year and model alone is not enough to guarantee fitment.

A trunk spoiler mounts on the trunk lid or decklid and follows the existing body line, which is the most subtle option and the closest to a factory look. A roof spoiler sits at the top of the rear window, and includes shark fin designs on hatchbacks and multi-piece wing kits on trucks. A wing stands off the surface on risers, sits higher in the airflow, and is the most aggressive of the three visually.

Most are supplied in glossy black ABS or grey primer and are ready to be painted to match your vehicle's paint code, which is what you want if the goal is a factory-integrated look. Glossy black can also be fitted as delivered for a two-tone contrast against body colour. Carbon fiber and fiberglass options on select applications are finished as-is and are not intended for paint.

It varies by application, and the listing states which applies. Some spoilers use existing factory mounting holes and bolt straight on. Others are supplied with a drilling template and instructions so the holes can be placed accurately, and kits such as the RAM 1500 roof wing include adhesive tape, adhesion promoters, and screws alongside the bolt-on hardware. Because drilling into painted panels is unforgiving, professional installation is recommended.

Both, but the balance depends on speed. A spoiler works by managing airflow over the rear of the vehicle, and larger designs such as multi-piece roof wings are built to add downforce and stability at high speed. At normal road speeds the aerodynamic effect is small, and most buyers are choosing a spoiler for the change in appearance. Treat any real handling benefit as a track-speed consideration rather than a daily-driving one.
